Projects

Research develops through long-term programmes rather than isolated publications. The projects presented here represent the principal lines of inquiry currently shaping my work across law, cognitive science, philosophy, behavioural science and institutional design.

Although they address different empirical domains, they share a common objective: understanding how institutional, cognitive and normative architectures can be designed to improve the quality, legitimacy and reliability of human decision-making.


Institutional Design and Decision Architectures

This project examines how institutional structures shape the conditions under which justified decision-making becomes possible. Rather than focusing exclusively on individual decisions, it investigates how legal, political and organisational systems can be designed to promote more reliable judgement while preserving fundamental normative principles.

Current work explores institutional legitimacy, evidential reasoning, legal decision-making and the architecture of public institutions.


Scientific Knowledge and Normative Reasoning

Scientific knowledge increasingly informs legal and institutional practice, yet its integration remains conceptually challenging. This project investigates how findings from cognitive science, neuroscience and behavioural research can be incorporated into normative reasoning without losing either scientific integrity or legal coherence.

Particular attention is given to epistemic standards, explanatory frameworks and the relationship between empirical knowledge and normative judgement.


Human Judgement under Uncertainty

Many important decisions must be made in environments where uncertainty cannot be eliminated. This project examines how people construct, evaluate and stabilise interpretations when evidence is incomplete, ambiguous or evolving.

The research draws on predictive processing, narrative cognition and decision theory to understand how coherent judgements emerge across legal, financial and institutional contexts.


Democratic Institutions, Polarization and Public Reason

This project explores the cognitive and institutional mechanisms that shape political disagreement and democratic resilience. Rather than treating polarization solely as ideological conflict, it examines how differences in evidential uptake, evaluative frameworks and institutional environments influence public reasoning and collective decision-making.

The project connects political theory, cognitive science and institutional analysis to better understand the conditions that sustain democratic legitimacy.


Artificial Intelligence and Human Decision-Making

Artificial intelligence is transforming the environments within which human decisions are made. This project investigates how AI systems influence judgement, expertise and institutional practice, while examining the conditions under which human and artificial forms of reasoning can be integrated responsibly.

Particular emphasis is placed on explainability, epistemic responsibility, decision support and the future relationship between human cognition and intelligent systems.


These projects continue to evolve as new questions emerge and interdisciplinary collaborations develop. Together they form an integrated research agenda aimed at understanding not only how decisions are made, but how the conditions for better decisions can themselves be designed.
